City Palace

The City Palace in Udaipur is a popular palace complex located close to the lake Pichola in the city. The palace was built to use as the nerve center of the Sisodia Rajput clan by Maharana Udai Singh in the year of 1559. The palace complex is a combination of several beautiful palaces. The flamboyant style was followed for the construction of this historic palace and it is the largest structure built in the state of Rajasthan in flamboyant style. The palace is situated at the top of a hill and an attractive view of the city is available from the balconies of the palace. The palace is furnished with antique furniture and paintings.

The Shilpgram is the name of an artesian village developed by the west zone cultural center in Udaipur. The location of the village lies just 3 kilometer away from Udaipur. The Shilpgram acts as a center enhancing and propagating the glory of the traditions, life style, folk arts and customs of the tribal’s and people live in the rural areas of Goa, Gujarat, Rajasthan and Maharashtra. The huts created in Shilpgram with mud and local construction materials reflect the cultural diversity of the western Indian states. The performances of the tribal and rural artists, who live in the Shilpgram huts are conducted here to entertain the visitor. The time period between 23rd December and January 1st is the season of Shilpgram festival, when the live folk performances are conducted in front of a massive crowd.

The Lake Pichola, an artificial fresh water lake in Udaipur is one of the prominent tourist destinations in the lake city of India. The lake named after the Picholi village in the locality was constructed in 1362 AD. The prime intention behind the construction of the lake was to meet the irrigation and drinking water needs of the city. A palace complex on the sides of the lake, Mohan Mandir, Arsi Vilas, Jag Niwas and Jag Mandir islands located in the middle of the lake are accountable for the increasing popularity of the lake among the tourists to the Rajasthan state. Birds like tufted ducks, cormorants, egrets, coots, terns, and kingfishers are seen commonly here.

Jag Mandir is a beautiful palace located in the lake Pichola in Udaipur. The palace is also famous in the
name "Lake Garden Palace", among the people of Udaipur. The palace was built by the Sisodia Rajput kings of ancient Mewar kingdom. Maharana Amar Singh was the one who started the construction of the palace in 1551 AD. When the construction of the palace was completed in the 17th century, Maharana Jagat Singh 1 was the king of the Mewar kingdom and the palace was named after him. The palace was a usual location to conduct the royal ceremonies and the royal family used the palace to spend their summer days during the regime of Sisodia Rajputs in Udaipur.

The Fateh Sagar Lake is one of the very popular lakes in the lake city of India. The lake was constructed by Maharanas of ancient Mewar kingdom. This artificial lake, situated at the North West side of the Udaipur city was constructed in the 17th century. Three small islands are also there in the middle of this lake. The island spreads over the area of 4 square kilometers is the largest among these three islands and hosts a famous public park called Nehru Park. There is a zoo and restaurant operating in this small island to attract visitors. The second island is the head quarters of Udaipur Solar Observatory (USO), while the third and the smallest island in the Fateh Sagar Lake is a park.

Sajjan Garh Palace was the former name of the present Monsoon Palace. The Monsoon Palace is a beautiful royal residency located at the top of a hill. The Monsoon Palace faces Lake Fateh Sagar in Udaipur. Maharana Sajjan Singh built the Monsoon Palace in the 19th century and the palace started to be known in the name of the king. The royal family of the Mewar Dynasty stayed in the palace to watch the monsoon clouds and later onwards the palace started to be called as the Monsoon Palace of Udaipur. The palace is presently under the control of the forest department of Rajasthan state.

The Sajjan Niwas Garden was built by Maharana Sajjan Singh in the 19th century and the zoo present in the garden has the fourth place in the list of oldest zoos in the Indian sub continent. The Bhartiya lok Kala Mandal conducts studies on the culture, festivals, folk music, and arts in the western sides of India. A group in the Bhartiya lok Kala Mandal conducts performances including folk dances and puppet shows in India and abroad. The institution has received so many national and international approvals.

The statue of Maharana Pratap on his favorite horse, Chetak is a historical monument situated on the Moti Magri hill in the southern end of the embankment built in the Fateh Sagar Lake. The complete statue is built with bronze. The monument was erected by the Maharana of Mewar Bhagwat Singh. A beautiful garden is also there near to the statue. The location is maintained attractive to attract tourists.

This is one of the famous historical monuments in the city of Udaipur. Bagore-ki-Haveli was built by the Mewar minister on the 18th century. There are more than 100 well furnished rooms in this historic palace. The walls and pillars in the palace are decorated well with different artistic works. The palace was under the control of Mewar clan till 1947. The West Zone Cultural Centre holds the present control of the Bagore-ki-Haveli.

Dudh Talai

It is a small lake located close to the Shiv Niwas Palace. The location is well known as a tourist place. The view of sun set from the location will be a remarkable experience. There is a special sun set point in this location famous for watching sunset.

Ahar Museum

The Ahar museum can be considered as cenotaphs of the royal Mewar family. According to the history, 19 Maharanas have been cremated in this location. There is a total of more than 250 cenotaphs of Maharanas are seen here. The location of the museum is just 2 kilometers away from the city of Udaipur. The figure of Sree Buddha, built in metal during the tenth century, found from the location is an example of the archeological importance of the site.


Best Season to Visit Udaipur

The summer season starts in the middle of March and lasting till June, monsoon season between the July- September months and the winter time during the October - March months are the major three seasons in the Udaipur city. The summer season, when the atmospheric temperature reaches near 40 degree Celsius will not be an advisable time to visit the location. The season of winter can be considered as the best time to have a trip to the Udaipur city.
