Fateh Sagar Lake

Fateh Sagar lake, said to be the pride of Udaipur is an artificial lake constructed by Maharana in 1680's.It is one of the most important lakes of Udaipur and the reason why Udaipur is known as the city of lakes.It is located on the north of Lake Pichola and north-west of Udaipur.As per Udaipur's Lake Conservation Society, this lake supports the water recharge system and provides employment to 60% of Udaipur's population.

History of Fateh Sagar Lake

The existence of this lake dates back to 1680's when it was built by Maharana Jai Singh but two hundred years later , the eastern bund which held the lake was washed away during floods and then in 1888, Maharana Fateh Singh reconstructed the lake, the first stone of the construction was laid own by Duke of Connaught, third son of Queen Victoria The name was derived from the king and hence it came to be known as Fateh Sagar Lake.


Things to do at Fateh Sagar Lake

This well planned lake extends to the length of 2.4 km with a width of 1.6km and depth approximately around 11.5 meters. It has three intake channels and one overflow channel to meet the needs of the monsoon season. It is embellished with 3 small islands which are listed below:

Nehru Park

The largest island of the lake, Nehru Park is developed into a park which houses a boat shaped restaurant and also a small zoo.Oval in shape, there is a riot of colors and a beautiful lily pond too. The bronze statue of Mahrana Pratap and his horse can also be viewed from this island. This island, or park is flooded with lawns with fountains and picturesque views.

The second island is dedicated as an public park with beautiful water jet fountains and is maintained by Government of Rajasthan.

The third island is dedicated to Udaipur Solar Observatory which is best known as the best solar observing site in Asia wherein large number of people come specially to see the sunrise and sunset.

This lake is pear shaped and is encircled by hills except on the eastern side where a straight stone dam can be seen.Motor boats or pedal boats van be hired o cover the circumference of the lake via Moti Magri Road, Fateh Sagar Drive or Rani road from where stunning views can be captured.

How to Reach

Fateh Sagar lake is within reach from Udaipur as it is 6 km away from the Udaipur Railway Station and 5 km from the main bus stand. The closest airport is 22 km away from Fateh Sagar lake.

Best Time to Visit

Since Udaipur has a sultry climate, the best time to visit is between March and September.
